Site Improvements

Oct 1, 2010: We have added status icons, picture thumbnails, and "breadcrumb" navigation. This includes 1,634,341,449 bytes of image data, and 527,982,089 bytes of thumbnails. We use the "Easy Thumbnails" utility to create them. We hope you find the changes to be an improvement.

Oct 8, 2010: We have also improved the navigation so you can traverse "up" and "down" the taxonomy tree. "Finding Nemo" exercise: go to Common Names, click in the "Used In" column filter and type "Disney". This will show all the Disney cartoon characters that are fish. Look for "Nemo" and click on the record. Click on the "Back: Species" link to find out about Nemo's Species. Click on the species record and choose "Pictures" to find 11 photos of Nemo's real life relatives, Amphiprion percula ("Clownfish").

07-Jan-2011: Minor changes and simplifcations to the navigation.

28-Jan-2011: Improved picture gallery, and some navigation fixes.

14-May-2011: Revamped data structure, transferred new data to test site.

20-May-2011: Uploaded new pictures, removed orphaned and widowed picture files.

14-Jun-2011: Uploaded and fixed many pictures and thumbnails, and new data. Added functionality to status icons.

08-Jul-2011: New filter facility on Pictures. Updated to ASPxGridView v11.1, and added scroll bars to browse pages.

15-Jul-2011: Adjusted column widths on browse pages.

30-Jul-2011: Improvements to Filtering on Picture Gallery and browse pages.

05-Aug-2011: Added new species figures. Added 335 GIF images and 491 JPEG images. Converted latest data for database upload. Database size is 1.4GB without pictures.

09-Aug-2011: Bug fixes related to editing and locating data. Improvements to history and breadcrumbs. Filter control tidied up in Pictures.

26-Aug-2011: Copied entire web site to http://fishwisepro.com.tares.arvixe.com to test performance and reliability improvements.

29-Aug-2011: Went live with new server, after measuring improved performance and greater reliability.

30-Sep-2011: Improved features for search crawlers, and minor layout improvements.

04-Oct-2011: Updated pictures, simplified menus, added Google+ buttons. Started work on Name Status. This will only be useful once the data is updated.

14-Oct-2011: Fixed several bugs, uploaded new data, added more search options.

28-Oct-2011: Additional work on the Zoom detail of the Species Status screen and other views.

04-Nov-2011: Adjustment to CSS font sizes, and Pictures page.

11-Nov-2011: Added quick search facility to home page, and Species Links view.

09-Dec-2011: Numerous bug fixes, additional tooltiptext info on icons, improvements for search engines to find data. Added Australian Checklist (1,555kb RTF file).

14-Dec-2011: Improvements to pictures page layout, added support for mobile phone browsers where possible to allow navigation on non-touch screen versions. Tested support on Opera Mobile browser and iPad/iPhone.

22-Dec-2011: Bug fixes in Pictures filter.

23-Mar-2012: More Bug fixes in Pictures filter, tweaks to front page colours and style sheet fonts.

27-Mar-2012: Improvements to Pictures page, and sitemap.txt changes.

30-Mar-2012: Simplified Cookie handling to speed up page load, plus new data structure and data.

12-Apr-2012: Re-posted data to SQL server, updated "New Species Described" stats.

03-May-2012: Re-worked filtering to speed up search from main page. Updated Pictures filter to work a bit better.

24-May-2012: More updates to filtering code. It's a mystery why DevExpress don't properly document their products, particularly ASPxFilterControl.

31-May-2012: Bug fixes for filtering code, added Credits and Credit URL to pictures.

21-Jun-2012: Work on Pictures page, ability to edit and delete records when logged in.

12-Jul-2012: Begin work on Print button and reports.

16-Jul-2012: Upload new database version and pictures.
