Efferent branchial ducts open by a common gill aperture on each side; lateral line system completely absent; degenerate eyes covered by muscle tissue; rays of the caudal finfold not bifurcated. Four genera and 25 species. <b><i>Myxine </i></b> occurs in all oceans except Australian and New Zealand coasts. <b><i>Notomyxine </i></b> and <b><i>Neomyxine </i></b> are found only off Argentina and New Zealand, respectively. <b><i>Nemamyxine </i></b> occurs in New Zealand and southwestern Atlantic, off southern Brazil, Uruguay, and northern Argentina.</i></b>
