Alepes melanoptera was originally described as Trachinus (Alepes) melanoptera by Swainson in 1839. It belongs to the family Carangidae and subfamily Caranginae. It is commonly known as Blackfin scad but has many other common names such as in USA (contiguous states) as Shortfin scad, in Japan as Seguro-mabuta-aji, in Philippines as Layaw, in Bahrain as Jinnes, in France as Selar aile noire. more common names It is found in Brackish and Salt water and its distribution is Red Sea, Indo-West Pacific: East Africa east to Hawaiian Islands, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia.
