Balantiocheilos melanopterus was originally described as Barbus melanopterus by Bleeker in 1850. It belongs to the family Cyprinidae and subfamily Barbinae. It is commonly known as Tricolor sharkminnow but has many other common names such as in USA (contiguous states) as Bala shark, in Philippines as Bala shark, in Cambodia as Trey kiet srawng, in Finland as Haibarbi, in Lao, Pop. Dem. Rep. as Pa pit. more common names It is found in Fresh water and its distribution is Widespread in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo [now extinct in many areas].
