Carapus acus was originally described as Gymnotus acus by Brünnich in 1768. It belongs to the family Carapidae and subfamily Carapinae. It is commonly known as Pearl fish but has many other common names such as in France as Aurin, in Germany, Fed. Rep. as Nadelfisch, in Italy as Galiotto, in Poland as Karap europejski, in Slovenia as strmorinec. more common names It is found in Salt water and its distribution is Mediterranean Sea, eastern Atlantic: Bay of Biscay to Ascension Island, including Madeira.
