Carcharhinus melanopterus was originally described as Carcharias melanopterus by Quoy & Gaimard in 1824. It belongs to the family Carcharhinidae. It is commonly known as Blacktip reef shark but has many other common names such as in Australia as Blacktip reef shark, in Japan as Tsumaguro, in Papua New Guinea as Black-tip reef shark, in Philippines as Lodlod, in South Africa as Swartvin-rifhaai, in South Africa as Blacktip reef shark. more common names It is found in Fresh, Brackish and Salt water and its distribution is Red Sea, Indo-West Pacific: East Africa, South Africa, Seychelles, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian Islands and Pitcairn Group north to Taiwan, south to Queensland (Australia) and New Caledonia. [No longer considered as present in the Mediterranean Sea -- (Fricke et al. 2007:14 [ref. 29533])].
