Chaetodontoplus melanosoma was originally described as Holacanthus melanosoma by Bleeker in 1853. It belongs to the family Pomacanthidae. It is commonly known as Black-velvet angelfish but has many other common names such as in USA (contiguous states) as Brown angelfish, in Japan as Kiheri-kinchakudai, in Papua New Guinea as Black velvet angelfish, in South Africa as Phantom Angelfish, in Micronesia, Federated States as Black velvet angelfish. more common names It is found in Salt water and its distribution is Indo-West Pacific: central Indonesia to Philippines.
