Chromis acares was originally described as Chromis acares by Randall & Swerdloff in 1973. It belongs to the family Pomacentridae and subfamily Chrominae. It is commonly known as Midget chromis and is known in Papua New Guinea as Midget chromis, in Guam as Midget chromis, in Micronesia, Federated States as Midget chromis, in Samoa as Tu'u'u-fo. more common names It is found in Salt water and its distribution is Western and central Pacific: New Caledonia, Rotuma, Tonga and Samoa east to Oeno (Pitcairn Group), north to Wake Atoll and Hawaiian Islands, south to Austral Islands and to Pitcairn Islands.

Habitat Notes   Found in exposed seaward reefs. Sometimes inhabits clear lagoons or channels. Occurs in small to large aggregations on the upper edge of the slope over live coral or rubble. Uncommon (Ref. 9710).
Depth Range   From 2 to 37 meters.
   
Distribution   Western and central Pacific: New Caledonia, Rotuma, Tonga and Samoa east to Oeno (Pitcairn Group), north to Wake Atoll and Hawaiian Islands, south to Austral Islands and to Pitcairn Islands.
