Entelurus aequoreus was originally described as Syngnathus aequoreus by Linnaeus in 1758. It belongs to the family Syngnathidae and subfamily Nerophinae. It is commonly known as Snake pipefish but has many other common names such as Snippe in Denmark, Merineula in Finland, Entélure in France, Große Schlangennadel in Germany, Fed.
