Epinephelus areolatus was originally described as Perca areolatus by Forsskål in 1775. It belongs to the family Serranidae and subfamily Epinephelinae. It is commonly known as Areolate grouper but has many other common names such as Areolate grouper in Australia, Omon-hata in Japan, Yellow-spotted rock-cod in Papua New Guinea, Lapu-lapu in Philippines, Squaretail rockcod in South Africa, Stompstert-klipkabeljou in South Africa. more common names It is found in Salt water.

Attains 50 cm. 'truncatus' in Red Sea. Found Red Sea south to Natal and to western Pacific. Depth 6-200 metres.
