Labeo altivelis was originally described as Labeo altivelis by Peters in 1852. It belongs to the family Cyprinidae and subfamily Labeoninae. Water Fresh water
Habitat Notes Prefers large rivers but is also found in large lakes and dams. Grazes on algae and `aufwuchs' from rocks. In summer after the onset of rains migrates upstream into tributaries to breed. Lives for up to 9 years (Ref. 7248).
