Melichthys vidua was originally described as Balistes vidua by Richardson in 1845. It belongs to the family Balistidae. It is commonly known as Pinktail triggerfish but has many other common names such as in Australia as Pinktail triggerfish , in Japan as Kuromongara, in Papua New Guinea as White tailed triggerfish, in Philippines as Ampapagot, in South Africa as Pinktail triggerfish. more common names It is found in Salt water and its distribution is Indo-Pacific: East Africa, South Africa and Réunion (western Mascarenes) east to Hawaiian Islands, Line Islands, Marquesas Islands and Gambier Islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Great Barrier Reef (Australia), New Caledonia and Tonga.
