It is commonly known as Striped eel catfish but has many other common names such as in Australia as Striped Catfish, in USA (contiguous states) as Striped eel-catfish, in Japan as Gonzui, in Papua New Guinea as Striped catfish-eel, in Philippines as I-ito, in Philippines as I-ito. more common names It is found in Brackish and Salt water and its distribution is Red Sea, Indo-West Pacific: East Africa, Algoa Bay (South Africa), Seychelles, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Samoa and Tonga, north to southern Korea, southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Western Australia at 32°S, Lord Howe Island and New Caledonia; eastern Mediterranean Sea (Red Sea immigrant).

Attains 32 cm. Throughout Indo-West pacific. Large shoals can be found in shallow water and tide pools.
Depth Range From 1 to 35 meters.
