Poecilia vivipara was originally described as Poecilia vivipara by Bloch & Schneider in 1801. It belongs to the family Poeciliidae and subfamily Poeciliinae. It is commonly known as Piekniczka. It is found in Fresh and Brackish water and its distribution is Venezuela to Argentina; also islands of the Lesser Antilles: Argentina, Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Puerto Rico and Martinique (introduced), Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Habitat Notes Widespread in mildly brackish water in canals and drainage ditches at the edges of swamps, but rarely found in freshwater.
