Sardinella melanura was originally described as Clupea melanura by Cuvier in 1829. It belongs to the family Clupeidae and subfamily Clupeinae. It is commonly known as Blacktip sardinella but has many other common names such as Blacktip sardinella in Australia, Black-tipped sardine in Papua New Guinea, Awol-awol in Philippines, Sardinha de rabo negro in Mozambique, Pata in Tanzania, United Rep. of, Dagaa-parata in Tanzania, United Rep. of. more common names It is found in Brackish and Salt water and its distribution is Red Sea, Indo-West Pacific: East Africa, Seychelles, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to northern Gilbert Islands (Kiribati), Samoa and Tonga, north to southern Japan, south to Dampier Archipelago (Western Australia), Queensland (Australia) south to 23°03'S and New Caledonia.
