Sardinops melanosticta was originally described as Clupea melanosticta by Temminck & Schlegel in 1846. It belongs to the family Clupeidae. It is commonly known as Japanese pilchard but has many other common names such as Ma-iwashi in Japan, Japaninsardiini in Finland, Pilchard du Japon in France, Japanische Sardine in Germany, Fed.
