Habitat Notes Attains 30 cm. The adult male of this striking parrotfish is green overall with scales edged in pink; pink cheeks and distinctive yellow margins to the caudal fin. Undergoes considerable colour change from juvenile to adult male phase. An uncommon parrotfish that frequents mainly coral reefs at depths of 1 - 30 metres. Feeds on algae scraped from coral with its beak. Known at present only from Kenya to Natal in South Africa. Very similar to S. japanensis (Bloch), of which S. capistratoides is a junior synonym. Closely related to S. Sordidus, S. genazonatus, S. pyrrhurus and S. bowersi. Usually over sand and rubble on silty protected reefs. Generally wary and not easy to approach.
