Syngnathus temminckii was originally described as Syngnathus temminckii by Kaup in 1856. It belongs to the family Syngnathidae and subfamily Syngnathinae. It is commonly known as Greater pipefish but has many other common names such as Longsnout pipefish in South Africa, Stor Tangnål in Denmark, Aiguille de mer in France, Große Seenadel in Germany, Fed. Rep., Greater pipe-fish in Isle of Man. more common names It is found in Brackish and Salt water.

Habitat Notes Found in coastal and estuarine waters to depths of at least 110 m (Ref. 4281); on sand, mud and rough bottoms. Common amongst algae and eel-grass (@Zostera@) (Ref. 6733).
Depth Range From 0 to 110 meters.
