Trachonurus sentipellis was originally described as Trachonurus sentipellis by Gilbert & Cramer in 1897. It belongs to the family Macrouridae. It is commonly known as Shaggy whiptail. It is found in Salt water and its distribution is Indo-West Pacific: Eastern Indian Ocean east to Hawaiian Islands, south to Loyalty Ridge (New Caledonia) and Norfolk Ridge.
