* Genus and Species can work separately or can be used together.
Use the Menu above to browse and navigate the data Or Use the 'Quick Search'
To get help and tips, Please click here
The Quick Search icon is found on the "Home" page. If you ever want to go back to the "Home" page just Click on the "FishWise" logo.
Quick Search has the added benefit of always operating on the full database and does not exclude records which have been marked as not available names. The data displayed from the menu / data pages initially only displays available names. (You have to manually include non available names if you want them displayed). If you are looking for unidentified species always use the Quick Search. TIP Hover your mouse over controls and icons to obtain information and discover the actions performed. Check the criteria before using any of the Quick Search options.
(begins with) If the criteria is (begins with), you must enter the beginning part of whatever you are Searching for. If you are looking for the Genus "Macropharyngodon", you could type in "M" into the "Genus" (begins with) box and you will get more than 700 records which is not very useful. You could type in "Macro" or "macro" the first 5 characters of the genus name (Quick Search is not cAse seNsiTivE). This will return more than 40 records, all starting with "Macro". You can browse through the list and select the genus you are looking for. (The number of lines displayed on each page can be adjusted using the control at the top or bottom of the page on the right hand side - the default has been set to 100 lines).
If you type in "Macrop" you will get just over 10 items which are displayed which makes it far easier to find the record you are looking for. The more characters you type in the fewer records you need to look through. Typing in the full name "Macropharyngodon" (if you manage to spell it correctly), will return only the record you are looking for.
You will find that it is easier and quicker to type in "macrop" and select your record than to struggle with the full name.
If you are now looking for the name combination "Macropharyngodon neglectus", you can type in "Mac" into the Genus (begins with) box and "neg" into the Species (begins with) box and you will get all the records where the Genus starts with "Mac" and the Species starts with "neg". You can then select the required record. The Genus and Species boxes can work together or separately.
(contains).
When searching for name combinations (Genus Species) you can either use the (begins with) method as described above or you can use the Genus Species (contains) box. To search for "Macropharyngodon neglectus" you can type in "don neg" into the Genus Species (contains) box. This returns 2 records and it is easy to select and click on the one you want. For "Cephalopholis miniata" - just type in "olis min" and you will get the record you are looking for.
This is the quickest method for finding a name combination and is my personal preference. You should experiment and decide which method works best for you.
