Aphanopus carbo was originally described as Aphanopus carbo by Lowe in 1839. It belongs to the family Trichiuridae and subfamily Aphanopodinae. It is commonly known as Black scabbardfish but has many other common names such as Black scabbardfish in USA (contiguous states), Kurotachimodoki in Japan, Aphanope charbon in Canada, Sabre noir in France, Schwarzer Degenfisch in Germany, Fed. Rep.. more common names It is found in Salt water and its distribution is North Atlantic.

Habitat Notes Migrates to midwater at night and feeds on crustaceans, cephalopods and fishes (mostly macrourids, morids and alepocephalids). Matures at 80 to 85 cm. Commercial catch up to 1000 t was caught off Madeira with a specialized commercial deep water longline (
Depth Range From 200 to 1700 meters.
