It is commonly known as Rainbow sardine but has many other common names such as Common sprat in USA, Balatiyong in Philippines, Rainbow sardine in India, Dagaa simu in Tanzania, United Rep. of, Sardine arc-en-ciel in France. more common names It is found in Salt water.

Water Salt water
Habitat Notes Mainly an inshore species. Earlier studies on the habitat and biology may have equally referred to @D. elopsoides@ which this species closely resembles. Can also be caught with ringnets and dipnets.
Depth Range From 10 to 20 meters.
